Malls, Shopping and Entertainment Centers

In the design, construction, and renovation of shopping and entertainment centres (SEC), great attention needs to be paid to the issues caused by sound and vibration, as well as to create the required acoustic comfort within the premises. The operating of SECs shows that, the more acoustically comfortable (less noise amplification) the shopping centre is, the more time a client is willing to spend whilst making their purchases. This leads to more engagement opportunities leading to more potential revenue, additionally making the centre a more desirable location for tenants, developing and growing rental rates through competition.

The issues with sound, vibration and acoustics within Shopping and Entertainment Centers:

  • Sound insulation of "noisy" premises of SECs. These include almost all entertainment facilities: cinemas, clubs, bowling halls, etc. So between them and shopping areas, vibration insulating floors, sound insulating walls or partitions, sound insulation of ceilings and floors need to be installed.
  • Sound and vibration insulation of utility systems: reducing the noise from ventilation and air conditioning systems as well as other adjacent service premises (vibration insulation of refrigerators, noise insulation of chillers, etc.). In this case, the objects of projection are shopping and entertainment as well as administrative premises adjacent to the utility systems.
  • The required acoustic comfort of a shopping and entertainment centres environment: noise reduction in galleries, atriums, and gaming areas. It is important to understand that poor acoustics in the SEC premises ultimately translate into lost profits of tenants and owners. As an example, we can cite one of the Moscow SEC, where a five-metre waterfall was installed in the centre of the atrium to attract clients. A few months after launching, it became clear that too much noise tired clients and store employees. As a result tenants refused to rent space near the waterfall.
